About The Author

Charles Sampson is the seventh son of the late Plummer and Lurline Sampson. Continuous discussions around the dinner table at 115 Melon Street in Laurel, MS, which began before he entered undergraduate school, serve as a starting point for the book. Charles has learned that troubles deepen character, and the ripest fruit grows against the most formidable wall.

Sparrows of Senegambia

This memoir connects my birthplace, life, work, education, and travels to more than a dozen African countries on the Continent; places in South America and 48 states in the South, Mid-West, as well as travels to Europe, Southeast Asia, including Thailand, the Cambodian and Laotian borders, and Indonesia.

My 2005 travel to Senegal was the beginning of my knowledge of Senegambia, a historical name for a geographical region in West Africa, now no longer recognized by that name. It is located adjacent to the West African countries of Senegal and The Gambia.

I was captivated from the first page. This memoir goes beyond storytelling; it's a bridge between continents, a song of survival, and a celebration of human spirit. The imagery of the sparrow will stay with me for a long time.
